Myles Garrett broke the NFL's single-season sack record Sunday during the fourth quarter of the Cleveland Browns' Week 18 finale.
Garrett tallied his 23rd sack by bursting off the right edge to haul down Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow with just over five minutes left on the clock. Teammates mobbed Garrett at midfield to celebrate the achievement.
The 30-year-old defensive end eclipsed the record of 22.5 sacks co-held by Michael Strahan (2001 season) and T.J. Watt (2021).
Garrett's previous career high in sacks was 16, achieved in both 2021 and 2022. Explosive games this season against the New England Patriots in Week 8 (five sacks), Baltimore Ravens in Week 11 (four) and Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12 (three) offset Garrett's recent dip in production and pushed him into record territory.
The No. 1 overall draft pick in 2017, Garrett has 125.5 career sacks in 134 appearances for the Browns. He was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and is heavily favored to win again this season.
The Browns kicked a last-second field goal Sunday to beat host Cincinnati 20-18 and finish the year 5-12. They failed to reach the postseason for the seventh time in Garrett's nine seasons.
