Colorado Rockies second baseman Thairo Estrada will miss between four to eight weeks after sustaining a non-displaced fracture in his right wrist, manager Bud Black told reporters Friday.
Estrada was hit by a pitch from Texas Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker in Thursday's spring training game.
Black said that Estrada will undergo more X-rays in four weeks.
'He came into camp looking great, moving well,' Black said of Estrada. 'He was having a good spring with the bat. It looked to be a really good fit. This is part of what happens in professional sports. It happens across the landscape of the game.'
Estrada was batting .400 (14 of 35) with seven RBIs and three steals while solidifying himself as Colorado's starting second baseman. He signed a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2026 during the past offseason.
Estrada, 29, was the San Francisco Giants' primary starting second baseman for the past three years. He hit a career-best 14 homers in both 2022 and 2023 and drove in a career-high 62 runs in 2022.
After batting .271 in 2023, Estrada's averaged fell to .217 last season. He had nine homers and 47 RBIs in 96 games.
Estrada has a .251 career average with 48 homers and 195 RBIs in 469 career games with the New York Yankees (2019-20) and Giants.
Kyle Farmer is now the favorite to be the starting second baseman when the Rockies open against the host Tampa Bay Rays on March 28.
Farmer, 34, is a .250 career hitter with 55 homers and 254 RBIs in 707 games over eight big league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-18), Cincinnati Reds (2019-22) and Minnesota Twins (2023-24).
