Emil Forsberg's free-kick goal in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time carried the New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win over Guadalajara in an opening group-stage match of the Leagues Cup on Thursday in Harrison, N.J.
From 20 yards slightly left of center, Forsberg fired his shot through the Guadalajara wall and into the bottom right corner of the net.
Red Bulls goalkeeper Anthony Marcucci finished with four saves for the shutout win. Guadalajara goalie Raul Rangel stopped three shots.
FC Cincinnati 3, Monterrey 2
Luca Orellano scored the tie-breaking goal in the 53rd minute, and host FC Cincinnati survived a late exchange of goals to defeat Monterrey.
The score was tied 1-1 before Orellano played a nice 1-2 combination with Evander, whose pass slipped Orellano in for a one-on-one against goalie Luis Cardenas. Orellano rounded Cardenas and tapped in the ball.
Pavel Bucha doubled Cincinnati's lead in the 90th minute, which proved vital when Monterrey's German Berterame sliced the deficit four minutes later. Evander scored a 31st-minute goal that was offset by a tally from Sergio Canales just before halftime.
FC Juarez 4, Charlotte FC 1
Madson scored two first-half goals, and visiting FC Juarez pulled away for a victory over Charlotte FC.
In the seventh minute, Jose Luis Rodriguez sent a cross from the left flank to the far post, where Madson headed it in.
Idan Toklomati tied the contest in the 18th minute, but Madson replied again three minutes later. Madson dribbled into the box on the right side, faked to his left and then beat Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina at the near post.
Moises Mosquera increased the visitors' lead to 3-1 just before halftime, and after Toklomati received a red card in the 80th minute, Oscar Estupinan added a tally near the end.
