Defender Nick Hagglund will return to FC Cincinnati after signing a contract through the 2023 season.
A Cincinnati native, Hagglund is an original member of the club, which entered Major League Soccer in 2019. The team acquired him via a trade from Toronto FC on Jan. 23, 2019.
He is the club's all-time leader in minutes played (4,215) and second all-time in appearances (57).
"We're thrilled to have Nick back with FC Cincinnati," general manager Chris Albright said in a news release Friday. "He culturally embodies how we want to build our team, and his leadership and experience are important for our group."
Financial terms of the deal weren't announced, though the club said Hagglund also will serve as a club ambassador to further his and the team's work in the Cincinnati community.
Hagglund, 29, made 24 appearances for FC Cincinnati last season, starting 17 before a broken wrist ended his season. He scored one goal.
In his MLS career with Toronto (2014-18) and Cincinnati, Hagglund has made 145 appearances (112 starts) with seven goals and four assists.
