Former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama Republican runoff on Tuesday to earn the party's nomination for a U.S. senate seat, multiple media outlets reported within hours of the polls closing.
Tuberville got past Jeff Sessions, who was trying to regain the senate seat he held before leaving to become the U.S. attorney general under President Donald Trump in February 2017.
Sessions, who previously served Alabama in the U.S. senate since 1997, had a falling out with Trump and resigned as attorney general in November 2018.
In the general election this fall, Tuberville will oppose Democratic incumbent Doug Jones.
Tuberville, 65, is a political newcomer who has said he was inspired by Trump's election. Trump endorsed Tuberville in the primary race against Sessions.
Tuberville led Auburn to an 85-40 record from 1999-2008. He also was the head coach at Ole Miss (1995-98), Texas Tech (2010-12) and Cincinnati (2013-16), compiling an overall 159-99 mark.
The Alabama runoff election was postponed from March 31 until Tuesday due to the coronavirus pandemic.
