One day after graduating from Harvard, Ohio State forward Seth Towns was reportedly detained by Columbus police Friday during a protest over the death of George Floyd.
The protest came four days after Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis.
Police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with third-degree murder in the death of Floyd, an African American. Chauvin was also charged with second-degree manslaughter.
Towns, a 6-foot-7 graduate transfer, was taken into custody but was released Friday night and is safe at home, NBC Sports reported Saturday morning. He was not arrested and faces no criminal charges.
The Ohio State fan website Eleven Warriors tweeted a video it said showed Towns being detained.
Towns was the 2017-18 Ivy League Player of the Year but has been sidelined since November 2018 by a knee injury. A Columbus native, he joined his hometown Buckeyes in March and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
In his sophomore, and final, season with the Crimson, Towns played in 30 games, averaging 16.0 points in 27.9 minutes per game. He shot 44.1 percent from 3-point range on his way to an Associated Press All-America honorable mention selection.
