Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt told a police officer that he would fail a drug test if one were administered, according to dashcam video of the Jan. 21 traffic stop in Rocky River, Ohio.
The video was obtained by Cleveland.com.
Hunt was pulled over for speeding, and as officers approached the car, they smelled marijuana.
Officer Michael Asbury at first told Hunt he would only get a speeding ticket if "there's nothing in that car." A search uncovered the marijuana in three different locations inside a backpack in the car.
Hunt first told Asbury that the pot was his brother's before admitting that he would fail a drug test.
"Yes sir," Hunt told Asbury. "It's the offseason. Sorry, I was having a good time."
Asbury seized the backpack but did not cite Hunt for drug possession, just speeding, telling Hunt, "I'm not going to write you a weed ticket either. Don't lie next time."
Rocky River Police Department said Asbury's actions were "appropriate," given that Hunt possessed less than a gram of marijuana.
Hunt also told Asbury that it "hurts my soul" not to be playing with the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Hunt, 24, signed with the Browns in February of 2019 after being cut by Kansas City. The Chiefs parted ways with their leading rusher after a video surfaced of him kicking and shoving a woman at a Cleveland hotel.
He was suspended for the first eight games of the 2019 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Hunt wound up amassing 179 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries in eight games last year.
